What is Instagram advertising?
Instagram advertising is in many ways similar to its parent company's ad feature 'Facebook Ads'.
Instagram advertising allows businesses to pay for sponsored ads, which Instagram consumers are then exposed to through the app's various features such as news feed, stories and the 'Explore' search function.
Instagram ads are similar in appearance to consumers' own posts, but the difference is in the top left corner, where it will say "Sponsored" instead. This applies whether you advertise directly through your own company profile or if you partner with a content creator, influencer, creator or whatever you know them as.
If you're thinking "Oh, blatant advertising isn't good for credibility", unfortunately we can only say "That's life". The Marketing Act is at the forefront and the Consumer Ombudsman is a tough nut to crack.
Why should you advertise on Instagram?
As of January 2022, Instagram has over 1 billion active users globally, making it one of the world's largest social media platforms. According to Instagram itself, 90% of users follow at least one company profile and 50% are more interested in a brand when they see ads from the company.
It's a lot of numbers to throw on the table, but there's no doubt that advertising your products and services on Instagram is a really good and profitable idea.
With so many active consumers on the medium, you can meet your target audience directly on Instagram. In 2022, one in four consumers will use social media to find inspiration - and new products and services. For you, this means that it can convert sales if your business sneaks into the many stories and posts where Instagram users find their inspiration.
Where are ads visible on Instagram?
Your ads are visible in three different places across Instagram - News Feed, Stories and Explore.
In addition to choosing where your ads are displayed, you also choose the type of ad(s) you want to use. Here you should consider whether you are mainly a company that offers products or services and whether your message is best in image and/or video format.
'Explore' is a slightly newer addition to Instagram advertising, and while it may sound like an overlooked feature, over 50% of Instagram users actually explore the 'Explore' feature every month.
How do you advertise on Instagram?
When you're getting started with your advertising on Instagram, there are a few steps you need to go through before you can press 'play' on your campaign.
We'll go through them for you!
If you want to get started with Instagram advertising, the first thing you need to do is make sure that your Instagram account is connected to Business Manager on Facebook. You need to do this because your advertising costs are charged via Business Manager.
When you advertise on Facebook, your ads will automatically appear on Instagram. But fear not! If you're only interested in advertising on Instagram, it's of course an option to opt-in.
You can choose between four different formats on Instagram in Business Manager.
- Image ads
- Video ads that can work both in a Reels format or as IGTV. It really depends on the length of your ad, as Reels is 1 to 60 seconds and IGTV is 1 second to 60 minutes.
- Carousel ads allow you to select up to 10 images or videos per post.
- Collection ads are ideal if your business sells products, as you can connect your webshop to the post and link products directly to the Instagram ad.
When planning a campaign, the first step is to set a goal for what your company wants to achieve with the ad.
Depending on the format you advertise in, you can choose between these objectives:
- knowledge
- range of reach
- Traffic
- interaction
- Installing the app
- lead generation
- Messages (DM)
- conversion -> encouraging people to buy.
- Sales from catalog
- Business traffic.
Now you've chosen your objective. Now it's time to define your target audience.
Business Manager has three different types of audiences:
- Custom audiences, which allow you to customize your audience by age, gender, geographical location, interests, job titles, marital status, etc.
- Copy audiences based on your custom audiences. Instagram analyzes your data and creates a new audience based on the behavior of your custom audiences.
- Saved audiences are the audiences that you have previously defined that you want to save and reuse at a later time.
Now you need to decide where your ads will be visible. As we went over earlier, you can place your ads on the news feed, stories and 'Explore'.
- In the news feed, your ad will appear between posts from people and brands that the user follows.
- In stories, your ad will be shown in between organic stories, but unlike organic stories, it will not disappear after 24 hours.
- 'Explore' is an obvious place to advertise as Instagram users are exploring and looking for something new.

What does it cost to advertise on Instagram?
The cost of Instagram advertising depends on what you are willing to set aside in your marketing budget. The cost per click and per purchase depends on several variables. In Business Manager, you choose whether you want to pay per impression or per click to your website.
You also specify how much you want to spend on the ad daily or for the full lifetime of the ad.
Click prices can vary anywhere from 50 øre to 15 kr. However, as a minimum, you can choose a daily budget of 5 DKK and if you pay per click rather than per exposure, the daily budget is at least 25 DKK.
