What is Instagram advertising?
Instagram advertising is similar in many ways to its parent company’s advertising feature,“Facebook Ads.”
Instagram advertising allows businesses to pay for sponsored ads, which Instagram users are then exposed to through the app’s various features, such as the news feed, Stories, and the “Explore” feature.
Instagram ads look similar to users’ own posts, but the difference is in the top left corner, where it will say “Sponsored” instead. This applies whether you’re advertising directly through your own business profile or partnering with a “content creator”... “influencer”… “creator”… or whatever you call them.
If you’re sitting there thinking, “Ugh, blatant advertising isn’t good for credibility,” we’re afraid we can’t say anything other than “That’s life.” The Marketing Practices Act takes precedence, and the Consumer Ombudsman is a tough nut to crack.
Why Should You Advertise on Instagram?
As of January 2022, Instagram has over 1 billion active users worldwide, making it one of the world’s largest social media platforms. According to Instagram itself, 90% of users follow at least one business profile, and 50% are more interested in a brand when they see ads from that business.
We’re throwing a lot of numbers at you here, but there’s no doubt that advertising your products and services on Instagram is a really good and profitable idea.
With so many active users on the platform, you can be sure to reach your target audience directly on Instagram. In 2022, one in four consumers uses social media to find inspiration—and, in that context, new products and services. For you, this means that your business can significantly drive sales if it manages to stand out among the many Stories and posts where Instagram users find their inspiration.
Where are ads displayed on Instagram?
Your ads appear in three different places across Instagram—the News Feed, Stories, and “Explore.”
In addition to choosing where your ads will be displayed, you’ll also choose the type of ad(s) you want to use. Here, you should consider both whether your business primarily offers products or services, and whether your message is best conveyed in image and/or video format.
“Explore” is a relatively new feature for Instagram advertising, and while it might sound like an overlooked feature, over 50% of Instagram users actually browse the “Explore” feature every month.
How do you advertise on Instagram?
When you’re ready to start advertising on Instagram, there are a few steps you need to go through before you can hit “play” on your campaign.
We'll go over them for you!
If you’re eager to get started with Instagram advertising, the first thing you need to do is make sure your Instagram account is linked to Business Manager on Facebook. You need to do this because your ad costs will be charged through Business Manager.
When you advertise on Facebook, your ads will automatically appear on Instagram. But don't worry! If you're only interested in advertising on Instagram, you can, of course, choose that option.
You can choose from four different formats on Instagram in Business Manager.
- Image Ads
- Video ads that can be used in either the Reels format or as IGTV. It really depends on the length of your ad, since Reels range from 1 to 60 seconds and IGTV ranges from 1 second to 60 minutes.
- Carousel ads let you choose up to 10 images or videos per post.
- Collection ads are ideal if your business sells products, since you can connect your online store to the post and link products directly to the Instagram ad.
When planning a campaign, the first thing you need to do is set a goal for what your business wants to achieve with the ad.
Depending on the format you're advertising in, you can choose from these objectives:
- knowledge
- range
- traffic
- interaction
- app installation
- lead generation
- messages (DMs)
- conversion -> encourages people to buy.
- catalog sales
- business traffic.
Now that you've chosen your goal, it's time to define your target audience.
Business Manager has three different types of audiences:
- Custom audiences, which allow you to tailor your audience based on age, gender, geographic location, interests, job titles, marital status, etc.
- Copy audiences based on your custom audiences. Instagram analyzes your data and creates a new audience based on the behavior of your custom audience.
- "Saved target groups " are the target groups you have previously defined and wish to save and reuse at a later time.
Now you need to decide where you want your ads to appear. As we discussed earlier, you can place your ads in the News Feed, Stories, and “Explore.”
- In the news feed, your ad will appear among posts from people and brands that each user follows.
- In Stories, your ad will appear among organic Stories, but unlike them, it won’t disappear after 24 hours.
- The“Explore”section is an ideal place to advertise, since Instagram users are actively exploring and looking for something new.
Are we a good fit for you?
Of course, we’d like to have as many customers as possible—but not at any cost. Because not everyone is a good fit for Amplify.

How much does it cost to advertise on Instagram?
The cost of Instagram advertising depends on how much you’re willing to allocate from your marketing budget. The cost per click and per purchase depends on several variables. In Business Manager, you can choose whether you want to pay per impression or per click to your website.
You also specify how much you want to spend on the ad daily or over the ad’s entire lifetime.
Cost-per-click rates can range from 50 øre to 15 kr. However, you can set a minimum daily budget of 5 kr. If you pay per click rather than per impression, the minimum daily budget is 25 kr.
