SEO copywriting - what is it?

SEO stands for "Search Engine Optimization", which means that an SEO text is a text written with the aim of getting your website to rank higher on Google. Optimizing your texts is a key part of online marketing, so that your website ranks higher in Google results and can be found faster by potential customers.

There is no direct answer to how SEO texts should look or be written in order for them to be rated positively by Google - and thus send a website further up Google's rankings. Google keeps its cards close to its chest when it comes to its so-called ranking factors.

However, there are some general guidelines for a search engine friendly text. You can read the Amplify SEO checklist to find our take on the best guidelines for writing successful SEO text.

The tarnished past of SEO text

Over the years, SEO copy has gotten a bad reputation among many. This is because there used to be an excessive focus on keywords, which resulted in SEO text content appearing empty and bland.

It was more about getting a keyword into a text as many times as possible without considering whether the text was coherent or relevant to users. In other words, it was more about writing for Google than for people.

Fortunately, this is no longer the case. Today, SEO text content must add value to users and provide them with the information they are looking for. It's important that you write for the user rather than the search engine, as Google will always prioritize the texts that create value for users. This discipline is also known as semantic SEO.

That's not to say that you should completely forget about keywords, because they still play an important role when Google ranks websites. Keywords should just be used in moderation and where it makes sense. The goal is to deliver quality content to your website that is both search engine friendly and retains the user.

Good vs. bad SEO texts

But what exactly characterizes good SEO text versus bad SEO text? First of all, the keyword is used naturally in good SEO text. It doesn't seem forced or artificial and the keyword is used to create relevant content for the user.

It also means that the text is written for humans and not machines, and therefore the text must not be mechanical.

It's also important that the SEO text is written in easy-to-read language that is aimed at the target audience the website should attract.

Furthermore, the text must not become what is known as a wall of text: a confusing wall of text without spaces. A good SEO text should therefore contain paragraphs as well as essential headings that both arouse curiosity and give the user an indication of what they should read about.

Why is SEO copy so important?

The text on your website helps increase Google's understanding of your website and is therefore an important part of your SEO strategy - and SEO is often an indispensable part of online marketing.

Having a website doesn't matter if it's not visible on Google - if it's not just an online business card.

Of course, you can also rely on Google Ads - paid advertising - to be visible in search results, but since many users prefer to click on organic search results rather than ads, it pays to prioritize SEO and thus also SEO texts.

Ultimately, this can affect the number of inquiries through your website and therefore the final revenue.
