What is remarketing?

Try to imagine the following scenario:

You walk into a store. In the store, you come across one or more products you might be interested in. However, you leave the store without buying anything - either to research alternatives with competitors or because you're just not ready to buy.

So the store's products may have piqued your curiosity. But your money is still safe and sound in your account or wallet. This is not an uncommon scenario for retail employees. Very few people buy a product or book a service the first time they visit a store.

The same is true in the virtual world - so you shouldn't expect your visitors to necessarily buy something in your webshop or book a service just because they have found their way to your website. Or to put it in a slightly more nerdy way: very few clicks convert.

Remarketing is a friendly reminder to your visitors about a product or service they've already shown interest in - but haven't yet invested in.

How remarketing works in practice

When a user visits your website or webshop, Google Ads stores a so-called cookie ID on the user's computer, phone or tablet - for example, if they have seen a product in your webshop but have not purchased.

Each cookie has a unique ID that Google Ads automatically adds to a so-called remarketing list. A remarketing list is essentially an overview of the visitors you have collected data on. Then, when a user fulfills certain requirements you set, they will see your advertising on selected platforms.
