Ad spend

Ad spend is the amount you spend on advertising in paid media, typically referred to as advertising expenses. The term covers the direct costs of placing ads on platforms such as Google Ads, Meta, Instagram, or LinkedIn. Ad spend includes only media costs and does not include other marketing expenses such as production, salaries, or agency fees. You use ad spend to measure and compare investments across different campaigns, channels, and time periods, allowing you to directly link ad spending to the value your ads generate.

I am a performance marketing specialist at Amplify, where I primarily work with paid marketing for our clients—mainly Google Ads, in which I have 7 years of experience. In addition, I share a significant portion of the responsibility for our clients’ tracking setups, which is all about ensuring that our clients can measure the impact of our marketing efforts.

What is ad spend?

Ad spend refers to the total amount you spend on paid ads in digital and traditional media. It covers only the direct costs of ad placements—that is, the money you spend to gain exposure—not expenses related to production, staff, or external partners. In other words, ad spend is your pure media investment, which you can compare across campaigns and platforms.

You can track ad spend across digital channels such as Google Ads, Meta, Instagram, or LinkedIn. Each platform collects data on how much you’ve spent and how that is broken down by campaigns, target audiences, and devices. In practice, this makes the concept central when working with performance marketing, where budget optimization and effectiveness are closely linked. In SEO or organic social media marketing, on the other hand, the focus is more on leveraging visibility without directly affecting ad spend, but data from paid channels can still provide insights you can use across your marketing strategy.

How do you use your ad spend?

You use ad spend to understand how effectively your ad budget is working for you. By comparing the amount you’ve spent with the value your campaigns generate, you can calculate key metrics such as ROAS—that is, Return on Ad Spend. This shows how much you get back for every krone you invest in advertising. You can also use ad spend as a basis for allocating your budget across channels, campaigns, or target audiences.

Ad spend is particularly valuable when you’re evaluating how different payment models affect your results. Depending on the purpose of your campaign, you can pay per impression (CPM), per click (CPC), per install (CPI), per action (CPA), per lead (CPL), per sale (CPS), or per engagement (CPE). The different models change the logic behind how your money is converted into value—and how you assess your performance.

Why is ad spend important?

Ad spend allows you to make decisions based on data rather than gut feelings. When you know your exact advertising expenses, you can analyze which campaigns are actually driving valuable results and which ones are wasting your budget. That insight is crucial when optimizing your marketing efforts and making the case for how the budget should be allocated.

With recent changes in data privacy—such as iOS 14’s tracking restrictions—it has become more complex to measure attribution accurately. That’s why ad spend is a stable part of the equation—a fixed reference point you can use to compare against your conversion data. When you align ad spend with your overall marketing strategy, you gain a solid foundation for optimizing performance across SEO, SEM, and social media marketing.

What types and varieties are available?

You can break down ad spend by channel type, media, and measurement period. In digital contexts, people typically refer to spend on search engines, social media, or display ads. Traditional media includes TV, print, and radio, but these are rarely used as standalone data points in digital marketing.

In addition, you can choose whether to include only the media buy itself or also agency fees and platform fees. This depends on how your organization measures profitability and prepares reports. As part of a comprehensive digital strategy, you can use both perspectives to gain a more nuanced view of your overall marketing economics.

How do you manage ad spend in practice?

You can track your ad spend directly in most advertising tools. In Google Ads, for example, you can see exactly how much you’ve spent in kroner and øre per campaign, ad group, and keyword. You can compare this data with your revenue to calculate ROAS and adjust your bidding strategies.

A simple example illustrates the connection:

You spent 1,000 DKK on advertising, and the campaign generated 5,000 DKK in revenue. Your ROAS is therefore 5 (or 500 %), which means you get five times your investment back.

By tracking changes in ad spend over time, you can spot trends such as rising click-through rates or declining effectiveness. This makes it easier to identify when you should cut your budget or test new channels. If you also combine these insights with data from sources such as Google Analytics, you’ll get a more complete picture of how paid traffic complements organic channels.

What should you keep in mind?

Although ad spend is a key metric, it doesn’t tell the whole story about performance. A high spend can mask ineffective campaigns, while a low spend may be too restrictive to generate real impact. It’s therefore about understanding the context—including goals, target audience, and channel strategy. For example, you might have a low CPC but poor conversion rates, which means that the overall value is still unsatisfactory.

In addition, make sure your tracking and data integration are set up correctly. If you work with both Meta and Google Ads, you need to ensure that the platforms track conversions in the same way. Otherwise, you risk optimizing based on inconsistent data. When you combine ad spend with metrics such as ROAS, CPC, and conversion rate, you gain a much stronger foundation for decision-making and can develop a strategy that effectively balances your budget and business goals.
